Take early action. Focus on some early actions that are inexpensive and easy to implement. Working through the GICC Green Business Application will help you think about where to start.
1. Best bets for early success include:
- Recycle (paper, aluminum, plastic, etc.)
- Save paper by setting your copier and printer defaults to double-sided
- Buy copier paper with a minimum 30 percent post consumer recycled content. (100 percent is best!)
- Save energy - turn off lights when not in use and unplug electronics after hours.
- When you need to buy new office equipment or appliances, be sure to purchase Energy Star.
- Install faucet aerators and check leaks on a regular basis to help save water.
- Buy less toxic cleaners to improve indoor air quality.
2. Formalize your Green program.
- Write an environmental policy (be sure to capture the actions you've already begun to take) and communicate it to your employees.
- Form a Green Team with members from all divisions of your organization to bring new ideas to the table and help implement plans.
3. Streamline who does what
- Divide duties among Green Team members. Engaged, informed, enthusiastic employees make for a successful program - so keep it fun!
- Some businesses may hire a Sustainability Coordinator or Consultant to organzie and lead company efforts and ensure positive results. These positions typically pay for themselves throught cost savings.
4. Measure your progress
- Keep track of your success. Measure how much energy you're saving, how much water you're conserving, and how much trash you're keeping out of the handfill through your efforts.
- These measures can be used to quantify the overall positive environmental impacts of your Green Business program - and how much money you've saved in the process.
5. Share your successes
- Share your successes with your employees, customers and community!
